Belleville’s U10 Spirits boys basketball team were selected by Ford and the Toronto Raptors for their commitment to helping out and being involved in the community last season.

The Spirits prize was originally to train on the Raptors court at the Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, but because of COVID-19 the prize was changed to a video chat with Jerome “Junkyard Dogg” Williams and some sweet Raptors gear.

Spirit players and their families went for a tour of Belleville’s Grace Inn Shelter to learn more about the homeless problem in the city and decided they wanted to help.

The team went to Grace Inn for a day to help set up their dining room and prepare the kitchen. This involved bringing in chairs, tables and dishes from a storage container and cleaning everything so it was ready to welcome its first guests.

They also ran a clothing drive to collect winter clothing for the shelter and those in need in the area. They distributed flyers, collected lots of clothing from around the city, delivered, and helped fold and organize all the clothing at the shelter. Lastly, they auctioned off one of our player’s arcade basketball systems to raise $200 for Grace Inn.
