Canada is in a must-win situation after their blowout loss to Australia in the FIBA World Cup opener on Sunday, according to head coach Nick Nurse of the Toronto Raptors.
Nick Nurse on Canada L in FIBA WC opener vs Australia: „To get out of this group, you have to play an extraordinary basketball. And we had some extraordinary moments tonight.“ Nurse added this L put them in do or die situation for the upcoming game vs Lithuania.

Nurse, who was tapped by the Canadian national basketball team to be their head coach in the FIBA World Cup after leading the Raptors to the 2019 NBA title, was doing pretty good in the early goings of the game. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to finish strong.
Canada kept it close against Australia during the first three quarters of the game. They even had a 77-76 lead heading into the final period, but the Boomers erupted and outscored the Canadians 37-15 in the final 10 minutes of the game to take a 108-92 win.
In the FIBA World Cup format, only the top two teams from each group will advance to the second round of the tournament, and as it currently stands, Canada will need to win their next two games in order to have a legitimate shot at moving on to the next stage.
That wouldn’t be an easy task, as they will be facing the Lithuanians who already won their first game against Senegal in the opening day of the tournament. If Canada wants to win their next game, they will need to improve their defense.
Nick Nurse said he hopes to get his point guards more involved in the next game, but in reality, everyone needs to give a significant amount of contribution if they want to get the W.
